🤓 2 Big Stories About AI
1. Google invests $300 million in ChatGPT competitor.
According to new reporting from the Financial Times, Google has invested $300 million in one of the most buzzy OpenAI rivals, Anthropic, whose recently-debuted generative AI model Claude is considered competitive with ChatGPT.
The 🥩 of it:
Google has invested $300 million in Anthropic, a company focused on developing advanced AI technologies.
Anthropic recently revealed their generative AI model, Claude, who is considered to be in competition with ChatGPT.
Anthropic aims to create AI systems that are more human-like and better understand human intent.
The investment is part of Google's efforts to stay ahead of the competition in the AI field, while other tech companies such as OpenAI are also investing in similar AI research.
Anthropic's technology could soon have applications in fields such as customer service, marketing, and healthcare.
The investment by Google marks a significant expansion of the company's AI portfolio.
Anthropic's technology is expected to complement Google's existing AI tools and services, and the funding from Google will be used to support Anthropic's research and development efforts.
The race to develop advanced AI technologies is heating up among tech companies. The big dogs can buy their way to the front of the race, but I think some of the coolest innovation in the next 12 months will come from the small shops with little funding.
2. Colombian judge uses ChatGPT to make a court decision.
A judge in Colombia used ChatGPT to make a court ruling, in what is apparently the first time a legal decision has been made with the help of an AI text generator (that we know of).
The 🥩 of it:
A Colombian judge, Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia, used OpenAI's ChatGPT tool to make a court ruling.
This is reportedly the first time an AI text generator has been used to make a legal decision.
The judge used the AI tool to ask legal questions related to the case and included its responses in his decision.
The case involved a dispute with a health insurance company over coverage for medical treatment for an autistic child.
The judge admitted to using the AI tool and included the full responses in his ruling, as well as his own insights and legal arguments.
Colombian law does not forbid the use of AI in court decisions, but ChatGPT and similar systems are known for giving biased, discriminatory, or incorrect answers.
OpenAI has implemented filters to eliminate problematic responses, but warns that the tool still has limitations and should not be used for consequential decision-making.
Some courts have already begun using automated decision-making tools, which has been criticized by AI ethicists for reinforcing racist and sexist stereotypes.
The Colombian court used the AI mostly to speed up drafting the decision, and the responses were fact-checked.
Is this a sign of more AI usage in legal decision-making in the future? With the recent debacle with DoNotPay, it’s interesting to see a judge be so open and willing to use it to make a decision. Will the future of “a jury of your peers” be a “a jury of AI”?

Loads of people still waiting for their upgrade options, it seems.
