🤓 2 Big Stories About AI
1. Decoding animal language through AI.
A California-based non-profit and their 40+ partners have started work on trying to decipher animal languages through the use of AI. Not only are they using these models to understand how animals communicate, but they’ve also discovered a new species of blue whales.
The 🥩 of it:
The Earth Species Project (ESP) is a California-based non-profit that uses AI to decipher animal languages. Their goal is to deepen our understanding of animals, and improve our efforts to conserve the planet.
AI technology is rapidly approaching the point of practical application, which could soon break the language barrier between humans and animals.
Some of their studies lately has discovered that animal interactions include oral, visual, and physical communication.
AI models rely on a wealth of data to learn and train from, and fortunately ESP is partnered with over 40 ecological and biological institutions worldwide to gather that data on animal conversations.
These partners use recording devices and sensors placed in remote locations, from mountain tops to the depths of the sea, to gather records of animal conversations.
ESP analyzes both "bioacoustic" and "ecoacoustic" aspects of animal language data to gain a deeper understanding of animal languages.
Bioacoustic - the unique sounds produced by individual species.
Ecoacoustic - the recordings of the animal’s ecosystem as a whole.
ESP's AI is particularly interested in cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals) as they have been in existence for 34 million years.
A separate team of researchers is using bioacoustics to discover new species of blue whales.
Through the analysis of animal language, experts can gain a deeper knowledge of how human activities impact the animal kingdom.
Admit it. We’re all a little bummed that they aren’t first trying to understand how to communicate with dogs.
2. Airlines invest in AI after huge growth in 2022.
AI is helping the aviation industry become more sustainable and cost-effective, while improving the overall travel experience for their customers.
The 🥩 of it:
When Swiss International Air Lines began to use A.I. technology to boost efficiency, the carrier was able to optimize more than half the flights in its network. It also saved 5 million Swiss francs ($5.4 million USD) last year by implementing AI into their business.
One of the models being used in the industry includes technology that helps airlines model various scenarios and account for more potential disruptions, reducing flight delays and cancellations.
AI is also being used to improve flight scheduling, weather predicting, fuel usage, and route optimization, maintenance, and airport operations.
Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and American Airlines are among the carriers investing in AI today, after 2022 revenue grew 44% to $727 billion from 2021.
JetBlue Ventures, a subsidiary of JetBlue, invests in AI startups including FLYR Labs and Fetcherr, to help improve fuel management, pricing and revenue growth.
“What is the [customers] willingness to pay? What is the elasticity of the demand? We know how to predict for every flight and every seat and how many passengers are going to buy a ticket for every possible price point,” says Uri Yerushalmi, cofounder and chief A.I. officer at Fetcherr.
